Fake payment screenshots: stop shipping on “I have sent”
If the money isn’t in your app, that green screenshot is just a picture.

I still think about the woman in Ikeja who shipped six phone cases on six screenshots. Three were real. The other three? One was an old Opay alert with the date cropped. One was “pending — bank will reflect.” One was just… wrong amount, wrong bank, lots of crying voice notes. She spent the weekend arguing instead of restocking. The fix isn’t clever. It’s boring. Don’t ship until *your* dashboard says funded.
Why sellers keep falling for it
Because checking the app feels slow when someone’s standing outside with a rider. Because December and payday weeks are chaos and you don’t want to lose the sale. Scammers know that. They’ve got GTBank / Opay / Moniepoint templates on their phones. Fonts, colours, everything. You’re not stupid for believing it once. You’re stupid if you keep believing screenshots after that.
- Photoshopped SMS — looks right, amount is wrong if you squint
- A real alert… from last week, or someone else’s payment
- “I sent to your other account” while rushing you
- Fake Paystack slips for a link they never opened

Other classics: same screenshot forwarded to two buyers (check the timestamp). Item is ₦28,500, they “sent” ₦2,850 and say sorry. You said Zenith; they pasted a GTBank number you never gave them. Soft voice notes at 11pm. Part payment on something expensive with “balance when it arrives.”
Before you seal the bag
Repeat customers who always transfer? Fine — but open the bank app yourself. Sender name, amount, time. Not the green bubble they forwarded. For everyone else, just send a protected checkout link. When it locks, you ship. When they confirm, you get paid. Less detective work.

When they get salty
Honest buyers get annoyed. They paid. You’re “doubting” them. Try something like: I believe you — I just don’t ship on screenshots for *anyone*. Same energy as buyers who won’t pay your account, flipped. You’re protecting stock, not insulting them.
If the bag already left
Export the chat. Keep dispatch proof. Tell your bank *today* — once money clears, chasing it is misery. Trust Layer orders: keep everything in the dispute thread (how disputes work). And yeah — escrow for strangers is cheaper than learning this twice.
Start this week
- Delete “send screenshot after transfer” from your pinned message
- Make one protected link for whatever you’re listing next
- Apply the same rule to repeats if you want a clean trail
Frequently asked questions
- Can a fake alert look identical to mine?
- Basically yes. People clone fonts for fun. That’s why a lock in a payment system beats squinting at a JPG.
- What about long-time buyers?
- Your relationship, your call. Plenty of sellers still use protected checkout for repeats just so there’s a paper trail when something goes sideways.
- They paid the wrong account — do I ship?
- No. Let them trace it with their bank. Your protected link always points to the right place.
